‘나팔절’에 이어지는 가을 절기로서 1년 중 가장 중요한(거룩한) 절기인 ‘속죄일’과 가장 큰 절기인 ‘초막절’에 지켜야 할 규례를 소개합니다.

속죄일 

26여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 27일곱째 달 열흘날은 속죄일이니 너희는 성회를 열고 스스로 괴롭게 하며 여호와께 화제를 드리고 28이 날에는 어떤 일도 하지 말 것은 너희를 위하여 너희 하나님 여호와 앞에 속죄할 속죄일이 됨이니라 29이 날에 스스로 괴롭게 하지 아니하는 자는 그 백성 중에서 끊어질 것이라 30이 날에 누구든지 어떤 일이라도 하는 자는 내가 그의 백성 중에서 멸절시키리니 31너희는 아무 일도 하지 말라 이는 너희가 거주하는 각처에서 대대로 지킬 영원한 규례니라 32이는 너희가 쉴 안식일이라 너희는 스스로 괴롭게 하고 이 달 아흐렛날 저녁 곧 그 저녁부터 이튿날 저녁까지 안식을 지킬지니라

 초막절 

33여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 34이스라엘 자손에게 말하여 이르라 일곱째 달 열닷샛날은 초막절이니 여호와를 위하여 이레 동안 지킬 것이라 35첫 날에는 성회로 모일지니 너희는 아무 노동도 하지 말지며 36이레 동안에 너희는 여호와께 화제를 드릴 것이요 여덟째 날에도 너희는 성회로 모여서 여호와께 화제를 드릴지니 이는 거룩한 대회라 너희는 어떤 노동도 하지 말지니라 37이것들은 여호와의 절기라 너희는 공포하여 성회를 열고 여호와께 화제를 드릴지니 번제와 소제와 희생제물과 전제를 각각 그 날에 드릴지니 38이는 여호와의 안식일 외에, 너희의 헌물 외에, 너희의 모든 서원제물 외에 또 너희의 모든 자원제물 외에 너희가 여호와께 드리는 것이니라 39너희가 토지 소산 거두기를 마치거든 일곱째 달 열닷샛날부터 이레 동안 여호와의 절기를 지키되 첫 날에도 안식하고 여덟째 날에도 안식할 것이요 40첫 날에는 너희가 아름다운 나무 실과와 종려나무 가지와 무성한 나무 가지와 시내 버들을 취하여 너희의 하나님 여호와 앞에서 이레 동안 즐거워할 것이라 41너희는 매년 이레 동안 여호와께 이 절기를 지킬지니 너희 대대의 영원한 규례라 너희는 일곱째 달에 이를 지킬지니라 42너희는 이레 동안 초막에 거주하되 이스라엘에서 난 자는 다 초막에 거주할지니 43이는 내가 이스라엘 자손을 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내던 때에 초막에 거주하게 한 줄을 너희 대대로 알게 함이니라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라 44모세는 이와 같이 여호와의 절기를 이스라엘 자손에게 공포하였더라

26And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD.28 And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God.29 For whoever is not afflicted on that very day shall be cut off from his people.30 And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people.31 You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places.32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.”33 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,34 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the LORD.35 On the first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work.36 For seven days you shall present food offerings to the LORD. On the eighth day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the LORD. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work.37 “These are the appointed feasts of the LORD, which you shall proclaim as times of holy convocation, for presenting to the LORD food offerings, burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings, each on its proper day,38 besides the LORD’s Sabbaths and besides your gifts and besides all your vow offerings and besides all your freewill offerings, which you give to the LORD.39 “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the LORD seven days. On the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest.40 And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.41 You shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD for seven days in the year. It is a statute forever throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month.42 You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths,43 that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.”44 Thus Moses declared to the people of Israel the appointed feasts of the LORD. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

God commanded the Israelites to observe the Day of Atonement on the tenth day of the seventh month. On this day, the Israelites had to stop working, lament and grieve for their sins and give an atonement offering. Anyone who did not stop working and afflict themselves would be cut off from the people (vv. 26-32). The Feast of Booths began on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. It was a feast for the Israelites to commemorate the way that God had provided for them during their time in the wilderness. The people gathered in accordance with the Sabbath regulations on the first and last days of the Feast of Booths and gave a food offering daily (vv. 33-40). 

Who is God?

Vv. 26-32 God opened a way for the Israelites to be atoned of their sins. This feast was later fulfilled by the high priest Jesus Christ who accomplished the perfect atonement on the cross. Now, the path has been opened for us to boldly approach God and engage in fellowship with him. Are you enjoying this grace of atonement? 

Vv. 33-44 The Feast of Booths was a feast for commemorating the time in the wilderness when the Israelites had to rely fully on God’s supply. The Israelites dwelled in booths as a confession that the abundant harvest they reaped from the land of Canaan was an extension of the ‘grace of the wilderness’. What must you do willingly to prevent prosperity from overshadowing the grace you enjoyed when you were poor?
