이제부터 너희는 외인도 아니요 나그네도 아니요 오직 성도들과 동일한 시민이요 에베소서 2:19

스티븐이라고 불리는 한 젊은 아프리카 난민 청년은 국적이 없습니다. 그는 자기가 아마도 모잠비크나 짐바브웨에서 태어난 것으로 추측합니다. 그는 아버지가 누구인지 몰랐으며 어머니마저 여의었습니다. 그의 어머니는 내전을 피해 이 나라 저 나라를 돌아다니며 노점 행상을 했습니다. 신분증도 없고 출생지를 증명할 수 없었던 스티븐은 영국의 한 경찰서로 들어가 자기를 구속해달라고 했습니다. 그는 감옥에 있는 것이 시민의 권리나 혜택도 없이 길거리에서 사는 것보다 낫다고 여겼던 것입니다.
바울은 에베소교인들에게 편지를 쓸 때 나라 없이 사는 어려움을 생각하고 있었습니다. 그의 편지를 받는 비유대인들은 이방인과 외인으로 사는 것이 어떤 것인지를 알고 있었습니다(2:12). 그들은 그리스도 안에서 생명과 소망을 발견한 후에야(1:13) 천국 백성이 된다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 알게 되었습니다(마 5:3). 그리고 예수님 안에서, 주님이 보여주신 하나님 아버지께서 아시고 보호하신다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지도 알게 되었습니다(마 6:31-33).
그렇지만 바울은 과거가 눈에서 멀어져 가면 우리의 짧은 기억 때문에 그것을 곧 잊게 되어, 소망이 삶의 새로운 일상이 되고 절망은 과거의 일이 된다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
우리가 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님 가족의 일원이 되었다는 것을 매일 깨닫고, 하나님의 집에 살면서 누리는 권리와 혜택을 이해하면서 안전하게 살 수 있도록 우리 하나님께서 도와주시기를 소원합니다.

 
• 주님, 주님이 우리를 찾으시기 전 우리가 얼마나 소망 없이 지내왔는지를 기억합니다. 우리가 아직도 길에서 헤매는 사람들을 잊지 않도록 도와주소서.

소망이란 소망 없이 살아온 사람들에게 있어 그들의 모든 것이다.

11. 그러므로 생각하라 너희는 그 때에 육체로는 이방인이요 손으로 육체에 행한 할례를 받은 무리라 칭하는 자들로부터 할례를 받지 않은 무리라 칭함을 받는 자들이라
12. 그 때에 너희는 그리스도 밖에 있었고 이스라엘 나라 밖의 사람이라 약속의 언약들에 대하여는 외인이요 세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는 자이더니
13. 이제는 전에 멀리 있던 너희가 그리스도 예수 안에서 그리스도의 피로 가까워졌느니라
14. 그는 우리의 화평이신지라 둘로 하나를 만드사 원수 된 것 곧 중간에 막힌 담을 자기 육체로 허시고
15. 법조문으로 된 계명의 율법을 폐하셨으니 이는 이 둘로 자기 안에서 한 새 사람을 지어 화평하게 하시고
16. 또 십자가로 이 둘을 한 몸으로 하나님과 화목하게 하려 하심이라 원수 된 것을 십자가로 소멸하시고
17. 또 오셔서 먼 데 있는 너희에게 평안을 전하시고 가까운 데 있는 자들에게 평안을 전하셨으니
18. 이는 그로 말미암아 우리 둘이 한 성령 안에서 아버지께 나아감을 얻게 하려 하심이라
19. 그러므로 이제부터 너희는 외인도 아니요 나그네도 아니요 오직 성도들과 동일한 시민이요 하나님의 권속이라
20. 너희는 사도들과 선지자들의 터 위에 세우심을 입은 자라 그리스도 예수께서 친히 모퉁잇돌이 되셨느니라
21. 그의 안에서 건물마다 서로 연결하여 주 안에서 성전이 되어 가고
22. 너희도 성령 안에서 하나님이 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 지어져 가느니라

You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people. Ephesians 2:19

A young African refugee who goes by the name of Steven is a man without a country. He thinks he may have been born in Mozambique or Zimbabwe. But he never knew his father and lost his mother. She fled civil war, traveling country to country as a street vendor. Without ID and unable to prove his place of birth, Steven walked into a British police station, asking to be arrested. Jail seemed better to Steven than trying to exist on the streets without the rights and benefits of citizenship.
The plight of living without a country was on Paul’s mind as he wrote his letter to the Ephesians. His non-Jewish readers knew what it was like to live as aliens and outsiders (2:12). Only since finding life and hope in Christ (1:13) had they discovered what it meant to belong to the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 5:3). In Jesus, they learned what it means to be known and cared for by the Father He came to reveal (Matt. 6:31–33).
Paul realized, however, that as the past fades from view, a short memory can cause us to forget that, while hope is the new norm, despair was the old reality.
May our God help us to live in security—to know each day the belonging that we have as members of His family is by faith in Jesus Christ and to understand the rights and benefits of having our home in Him. Mart DeHaan

 
• Lord, as we remember how hopeless we were before You found us, please help us not to forget those who are still on the street.
Hope means the most to those who have lived without it.

11. Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men) --
12. remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
13. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
14. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
15. by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,
16. and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
17. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.
18. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
19. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,
20. built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
21. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
22. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
