인내로써 우리 앞에 한 경주를 하며 - 히브리서 12:1
텍사스 A&M 대학교 미식축구경기장에는 ‘열두 번째 선수의 집’이라는 큰 표지판이 걸려 있습니다. 열한 명의 선수가 한 팀이 되어 운동장에서 벌이는 경기에서 열두 번째 선수란 경기 내내 일어서서 자신의 팀을 응원하는 수천 명의 A&M 대학교 학생들의 존재를 말합니다. 이 전통은 1922년으로 거슬러 올라가, 감독이 관전 중인 한 학생에게 선수 옷으로 차려입고 부상당한 선수 대신 출전할 준비를 하라고 요청한 데서 비롯되었습니다. 그 학생이 경기에 투입되지는 않았지만, 기꺼이 사이드라인에서 대기해준 것이 팀의 사기를 크게 진작시켰던 것입니다.

우리는 신앙 여정을 혼자 가는 것이 아닙니다. 주님께 충성했던 위대한 성인들과 평범한 사람들이 그들의 본보기로, 그리고 그들이 지금 천국에 있다는 사실로 우리를 격려해줍니다. 그들은 우리가 아직 경기장에 있을 때, 우리와 함께 서 있는 영적인 열두 번째 선수인 것입니다.
“믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인”(히 12:2) 예수님께 우리의 시선을 고정시킬 때, 우리는 주님을 따랐던 모든 사람들로부터 격려를 받습니다.
주님, 천국에서 우리를 응원하고 있는 사람들이 있다는 것을 알게 하소서. 오늘 우리에게 믿음의 경주를 달려갈 힘을 주소서.
과거의 충실한 그리스도인들이 오늘날 우리를 격려해준다.

[32] 내가 무슨 말을 더 하리요 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 입다, 다윗 및 사무엘과 선지자들의 일을 말하려면 내게 시간이 부족하리로다
[33] 그들은 믿음으로 나라들을 이기기도 하며 의를 행하기도 하며 약속을 받기도 하며 사자들의 입을 막기도 하며
[34] 불의 세력을 멸하기도 하며 칼날을 피하기도 하며 연약한 가운데서 강하게 되기도 하며 전쟁에 용감하게 되어 이방 사람들의 진을 물리치기도 하며
[35] 여자들은 자기의 죽은 자들을 부활로 받아들이기도 하며 또 어떤 이들은 더 좋은 부활을 얻고자 하여 심한 고문을 받되 구차히 풀려나기를 원하지 아니하였으며
[36] 또 어떤 이들은 조롱과 채찍질뿐 아니라 결박과 옥에 갇히는 시련도 받았으며
[37] 돌로 치는 것과 톱으로 켜는 것과 시험과 칼로 죽임을 당하고 양과 염소의 가죽을 입고 유리하여 궁핍과 환난과 학대를 받았으니
[38] (이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못하느니라) 그들이 광야와 산과 동굴과 토굴에 유리하였느니라
[39] 이 사람들은 다 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았으나 약속된 것을 받지 못하였으니
[40] 이는 하나님이 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 것을 예비하셨은즉 우리가 아니면 그들로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이라
[12:1] 이러므로 우리에게 구름 같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들이 있으니 모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어 버리고 인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하며
[2] 믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자 그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사 부끄러움을 개의치 아니하시더니 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으셨느니라

Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. - Hebrews 12:1
A large sign at the Texas A&M University football stadium says “HOME OF THE 12TH MAN.” While each team is allowed eleven players on the field, the 12th Man is the presence of thousands of A&M students who remain standing during the entire game to cheer their team on. The tradition traces its roots to 1922 when the coach called a student from the stands to suit up and be ready to replace an injured player. Although he never entered the game, his willing presence on the sideline greatly encouraged the team.
Hebrews 11 describes heroes of the faith who faced great trials and remained loyal to God. Chapter 12 begins, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”(v.1).
We are not alone on our journey of faith. The great saints and ordinary people who have been faithful to the Lord encourage us by their example and also by their presence in heaven. They are a spiritual 12th Man standing with us while we are still on the field.
As we fix our eyes on Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter of faith”(12:2), we are spurred on by all those who followed Him.
Lord, may we be aware of those in heaven who are cheering us on. Give us strength to run our race of faith today.
Faithful Christians from the past encourage us today.
Hebrews 11:32–12:3
[32] And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets:
[33] who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
[34] quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
[35] Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
[36] Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment.
[37] They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented--
[38] of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
[39] And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise,
[40] God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
[12:1] Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
[2] looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
[3] For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

경기나 경주에서 가장 중요한 것은 목표입니다.
선수들은 뛰고 달리고하면서 수없이 옮겨다니지만 목표는 언제나 거기 있습니다.
믿음의 경주에 있어서도 마찬가지입니다.
우리의 선진들이 환경과 조건을 따라서 수도 없이 옮겨다녔고 우리도 그러합니다.
우리는 믿음의 주요 또 온전케 하시는 이인 예수님을 바라보면서 달려갑니다.
거기에 영원한 승리가 있기에 말입니다.
오늘도 힘찬 발걸음을 내 딛습니다.
사랑하는 귀한 우리 식구들 모두 함께 달려갑시다.

믿음의 시야를 잃어버리기 쉬운 요즘, 이미 앞서가신 믿음의 선진들이 하늘에서 나를 응원하고 있다는 관점이 새롭습니다. 사나죽으나 하나님의 영광을 위해서 살겠다는 나의 다짐, 고백을 되뇌이며, 주어진 모든 일에 성실하게 감사함으로 살아가는 오늘 하루가 되게 하시고, 부족한 지혜와 인내를 의뢰합니다.~
