24장에 이어 다윗은 또다시 사울을 죽일 기회를 얻지만, 이번에도 사울을 살려 줍니다. 24장과 26장이 거의 비슷해 보이지만 다윗이 보인 반응은 확연히 다릅니다.

다시 다윗을 잡으려는 사울 

1십 사람이 기브아에 와서 사울에게 말하여 이르되 다윗이 광야 앞 하길라 산에 숨지 아니하였나이까 하매 2사울이 일어나 십 광야에서 다윗을 찾으려고 이스라엘에서 택한 사람 삼천 명과 함께 십 광야로 내려가서 3사울이 광야 앞 하길라 산 길 가에 진 치니라 다윗이 광야에 있더니 사울이 자기를 따라 광야로 들어옴을 알고 4이에 다윗이 정탐꾼을 보내어 사울이 과연 이른 줄 알고 5다윗이 일어나 사울이 진 친 곳에 이르러 사울과 넬의 아들 군사령관 아브넬이 머무는 곳을 본즉 사울이 진영 가운데에 누웠고 백성은 그를 둘러 진 쳤더라

 다시 사울을 살려주는 다윗 

 6이에 다윗이 헷 사람 아히멜렉과 스루야의 아들 요압의 아우 아비새에게 물어 이르되 누가 나와 더불어 진영에 내려가서 사울에게 이르겠느냐 하니 아비새가 이르되 내가 함께 가겠나이다 7다윗과 아비새가 밤에 그 백성에게 나아가 본즉 사울이 진영 가운데 누워 자고 창은 머리 곁 땅에 꽂혀 있고 아브넬과 백성들은 그를 둘러 누웠는지라 8아비새가 다윗에게 이르되 하나님이 오늘 당신의 원수를 당신의 손에 넘기셨나이다 그러므로 청하오니 내가 창으로 그를 찔러서 단번에 땅에 꽂게 하소서 내가 그를 두 번 찌를 것이 없으리이다 하니 9다윗이 아비새에게 이르되 죽이지 말라 누구든지 손을 들어 여호와의 기름 부음 받은 자를 치면 죄가 없겠느냐 하고 10다윗이 또 이르되 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 여호와께서 그를 치시리니 혹은 죽을 날이 이르거나 또는 전장에 나가서 망하리라 11내가 손을 들어 여호와의 기름 부음 받은 자를 치는 것을 여호와께서 금하시나니 너는 그의 머리 곁에 있는 창과 물병만 가지고 가자 하고 12다윗이 사울의 머리 곁에서 창과 물병을 가지고 떠나가되 아무도 보거나 눈치 채지 못하고 깨어 있는 사람도 없었으니 이는 여호와께서 그들을 깊이 잠들게 하셨으므로 그들이 다 잠들어 있었기 때문이었더라

[ 1 Samuel 26:1 - 26:12 ]

1Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding himself on the hill of Hachilah, which is on the east of Jeshimon?”2 So Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph with three thousand chosen men of Israel to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.3 And Saul encamped on the hill of Hachilah, which is beside the road on the east of Jeshimon. But David remained in the wilderness. When he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness,4 David sent out spies and learned that Saul had indeed come.5 Then David rose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, with Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. Saul was lying within the encampment, while the army was encamped around him.6 Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Joab’s brother Abishai the son of Zeruiah, “Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”7 So David and Abishai went to the army by night. And there lay Saul sleeping within the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abner and the army lay around him.8 Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.”9 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the LORD’s anointed and be guiltless?”10 And David said, “As the LORD lives, the LORD will strike him, or his day will come to die, or he will go down into battle and perish.11 The LORD forbid that I should put out my hand against the LORD’s anointed. But take now the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.”12 So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head, and they went away. No man saw it or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen upon them. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Saul, who had declared ‘David shall be king’ (23:17) once again pursued David in the wilderness of Ziph. Just as he had been helplessly exposed to David at Engedi, this time Saul was discovered by David while he was fast asleep (vv. 1-7). David’s loyal kinsman Abishai declared his willingness to kill Saul. However, once again David would not allow it. This was because the incident with Nabal had given him even stronger conviction that ‘vengeance belongs to God’ (25:39). Just as David had cut off a piece of Saul’s garment in the cave, this time David took Saul’s spear and jar of water (vv. 8-12).  

Who is God?

V. 12 God made Saul’s army fall into a deep sleep. He turned the tables so that David the fugitive was able to spare the life of his pursuer Saul. Are there any problems that are surrounding and constricting you in the same way that David was harassed by Saul? Trust that God can make everything still in an instant.  

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 6-8, 12 Saul commanded his soldiers to set up camp on all four sides and made Abnel and his men lie down within the encampments. He then stuck his spear into the ground by his head. This image of Saul, who relied on a spear rather than God, is a pitiful one. Let’s not rely on things that can disappear in an instant to keep us safe. Without God, nothing and no one can keep us safe.

Lord, help me to stop trying to achieve peace by my own strength.
