1 유다 온 백성이 나이가 십육 세 된 웃시야를 세워 그의 아버지 아마샤를 대신하여 왕으로 삼으니

2 아마샤 왕이 그의 열조들의 묘실에 누운 후에 웃시야가 엘롯을 건축하여 유다에 돌렸더라

3 웃시야가 왕위에 오를 때에 나이가 십육 세라 예루살렘에서 오십이 년 간 다스리니라 그의 어머니의 이름은 여골리아요 예루살렘 사람이더라

4 웃시야가 그의 아버지 아마샤의 모든 행위대로 여호와 보시기에 정직하게 행하며

5 하나님의 묵시를 밝히 아는 스가랴가 사는 날에 하나님을 찾았고 그가 여호와를 찾을 동안에는 하나님이 형통하게 하셨더라

6 웃시야가 나가서 블레셋 사람들과 싸우고 가드 성벽과 야브네 성벽과 아스돗 성벽을 헐고 아스돗 땅과 블레셋 사람들 가운데에 성읍들을 건축하매

7 하나님이 그를 도우사 블레셋 사람들과 구르바알에 거주하는 아라비아 사람들과 마온 사람들을 치게 하신지라

8 암몬 사람들이 웃시야에게 조공을 바치매 웃시야가 매우 강성하여 이름이 애굽 변방까지 퍼졌더라

9 웃시야가 예루살렘에서 성 모퉁이 문과 골짜기 문과 성굽이에 망대를 세워 견고하게 하고

10 또 광야에 망대를 세우고 물 웅덩이를 많이 파고 고원과 평지에 가축을 많이 길렀으며 또 여러 산과 좋은 밭에 농부와 포도원을 다스리는 자들을 두었으니 농사를 좋아함이었더라

11 웃시야에게 또 싸우는 군사가 있으니 서기관 여이엘과 병영장 마아세야가 직접 조사한 수효대로 왕의 지휘관 하나냐의 휘하에 속하여 떼를 지어 나가서 싸우는 자라

12 족장의 총수가 이천육백 명이니 모두 큰 용사요

13 그의 휘하의 군대가 삼십만 칠천오백 명이라 건장하고 싸움에 능하여 왕을 도와 적을 치는 자이며

14 웃시야가 그의 온 군대를 위하여 방패와 창과 투구와 갑옷과 활과 물매 돌을 준비하고

15 또 예루살렘에서 재주 있는 사람들에게 무기를 고안하게 하여 망대와 성곽 위에 두어 화살과 큰 돌을 쏘고 던지게 하였으니 그의 이름이 멀리 퍼짐은 기이한 도우심을 얻어 강성하여짐이었더라

16 그가 강성하여지매 그의 마음이 교만하여 악을 행하여 그의 하나님 여호와께 범죄하되 곧 여호와의 성전에 들어가서 향단에 분향하려 한지라

17 제사장 아사랴가 여호와의 용맹한 제사장 팔십 명을 데리고 그의 뒤를 따라 들어가서

18 웃시야 왕 곁에 서서 그에게 이르되 웃시야여 여호와께 분향하는 일은 왕이 할 바가 아니요 오직 분향하기 위하여 구별함을 받은 아론의 자손 제사장들이 할 바니 성소에서 나가소서 왕이 범죄하였으니 하나님 여호와에게서 영광을 얻지 못하리이다

19 웃시야가 손으로 향로를 잡고 분향하려 하다가 화를 내니 그가 제사장에게 화를 낼 때에 여호와의 전 안 향단 곁 제사장들 앞에서 그의 이마에 나병이 생긴지라

20 대제사장 아사랴와 모든 제사장이 왕의 이마에 나병이 생겼음을 보고 성전에서 급히 쫓아내고 여호와께서 치시므로 왕도 속히 나가니라

21 웃시야 왕이 죽는 날까지 나병환자가 되었고 나병환자가 되매 여호와의 전에서 끊어져 별궁에 살았으므로 그의 아들 요담이 왕궁을 관리하며 백성을 다스렸더라

22 웃시야의 남은 시종 행적은 아모스의 아들 선지자 이사야가 기록하였더라

23 웃시야가 그의 조상들과 함께 누우매 그는 나병환자라 하여 왕들의 묘실에 접한 땅 곧 그의 조상들의 곁에 장사하니라 그의 아들 요담이 대신하여 왕이 되니라

하나님은 어떤 분입니까?

2, 5-15절   자신을 찾는 자들을 넘치도록 도우십니다. 아마샤처럼 웃시야도 하나님을 의지하는 동안 강해지고 번성합니다. 부왕 아마샤가 정복한 엘랏에 성을 건축하고 블레셋과 마온(암몬)을 정복하며, 애굽 변방까지 유다 영토를 확장합니다. 파괴된 예루살렘을 보수하고 농경으로 백성의 산업을 윤택하게 하며, 군사력을 기르고 군비를 확충합니다. 웃시야왕이 성취한 유다 안팎의 번성은 하나님을 찾은 그에게 하나님이 베푸신 ‘기이한 도우심’의 결과입니다. 하나님의 백성에게 하나님을 찾고 하나님의 뜻을 구하는 것보다 급하고 이로운 일은 없습니다.

내게 주시는 교훈은 무엇입니까?

4-5, 17-18절   하나님의 사람은 말씀을 따라 말하고 움직여야 합니다. 하나님의 묵시를 잘 아는 스가랴는 묵시에서 비롯된 교훈과 훈계, 격려와 꾸짖음, 설득과 경고로 웃시야가 하나님을 찾도록 인도했습니다. 세월이 흘러 웃시야가 성전에 분향하려고 할 때, 제사장 아사랴와 ‘용맹한 제사장’들이 왕의 권력을 두려워하지 않고 왕의 잘못을 지적했습니다. 말씀이 주는 지혜로 충만했던 스가랴와 말씀이 주는 용기로 담대했던 제사장들처럼, 말씀으로 자기 삶을 형성할 때 지혜롭고 용맹할 수 있습니다.16-23절   강성해진 웃시야는 교만해져서 ‘자기를 강하게 하신’ 하나님을 거역합니다. 대제사장 아사랴와 80명의 제사장들의 만류에도 성전에 들어가 분향합니다. 분향하는 일은 제사장들만 할 수 있는 일입니다. 하나님이 왕에게는 분향할 자격을 주지 않으셨습니다. 그런데도 웃시야는 그것마저 하려 들었습니다. 결국 웃시야는 나병에 걸려 성전에서 쫓겨나고 별궁에 격리되어 여생을 보냅니다. 교만이란 하나님이 정해 주신 한계를 넘어, 모든 것을 자기 손아귀에 쥐려는 태도입니다. 내 마음대로 안 되는 일이 있다는 한계를 인정하는 것이 겸손입니다. 한 사람이 모든 것을 할 수 없기에 공동체는 합의와 협력으로 운영되어야 합니다. 특정인이 모든 일을 자기 뜻대로 할 수 없는 것이 건강한 하나님 나라 공동체의 특징입니다.

1And all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah.2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah, after the king slept with his fathers.3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecoliah of Jerusalem.4 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done.5 He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God, and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper.6 He went out and made war against the Philistines and broke through the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod, and he built cities in the territory of Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines.7 God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabians who lived in Gurbaal and against the Meunites.8 The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread even to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.9 Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate and at the Valley Gate and at the Angle, and fortified them.10 And he built towers in the wilderness and cut out many cisterns, for he had large herds, both in the Shephelah and in the plain, and he had farmers and vinedressers in the hills and in the fertile lands, for he loved the soil.11 Moreover, Uzziah had an army of soldiers, fit for war, in divisions according to the numbers in the muster made by Jeiel the secretary and Maaseiah the officer, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king's commanders.12 The whole number of the heads of fathers' houses of mighty men of valor was2,600.13 Under their command was an army of307,500, who could make war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.14 And Uzziah prepared for all the army shields, spears, helmets, coats of mail, bows, and stones for slinging.15 In Jerusalem he made machines, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and the corners, to shoot arrows and great stones. And his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped, till he was strong.16 But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was unfaithful to the LORD his God and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.17 But Azariah the priest went in after him, with eighty priests of the LORD who were men of valor,18 and they withstood King Uzziah and said to him, “It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have done wrong, and it will bring you no honor from the LORD God.”19 Then Uzziah was angry. Now he had a censer in his hand to burn incense, and when he became angry with the priests, leprosy broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the LORD, by the altar of incense.20 And Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous in his forehead! And they rushed him out quickly, and he himself hurried to go out, because the LORD had struck him.21 And King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death, and being a leper lived in a separate house, for he was excluded from the house of the LORD. And Jotham his son was over the king's household, governing the people of the land.22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, from first to last, Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz wrote.23 And Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the burial field that belonged to the kings, for they said, “He is a leper.” And Jotham his son reigned in his place.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Uzziah became king at the age of sixteen and did what was right in God’s eyes. Under the guidance of Zechariah, who taught him to fear the Lord, he led Judah to become a powerful nation (vv. 1-15). However, later Uzziah became arrogant and rebelled against the God who had made him strong. He burned incense in the temple—a duty God had reserved exclusively for the priests. Because of this sin, Uzziah was struck with leprosy, was driven out of the temple, and spent the rest of his life in isolation (vv. 16-23).

웃시야는 16세에 왕이 되어 하나님 보시기에 올바른 일을 했고, 하나님을 경외하도록 가르쳐 주는 스가랴의 지도를 받으며 하나님을 찾았습니다. 그리고 유다를 부강한 나라로 이끕니다(1-15절). 그러나 웃시야는 교만해져서 ‘자기를 강하게 하신 하나님’을 거역했습니다. 그는 하나님이 제사장들에게만 맡기신 성전에 분향하는 일을 행합니다. 결국 웃시야는 이 죄 때문에 나병에 걸려 성전에서 쫓겨났고, 별궁에 격리되어 여생을 보냈습니다(16-23절).

Who is God?

Vv. 5, 15b God blessed abundantly those who earnestly seek him. While Uzziah sought God, everything he undertook—warfare, construction, agriculture—succeeded. The best way to serve in God's kingdom is by wholeheartedly seeking his will. The Lord will surely bless what is right in his sight.

자신을 찾는 자들을 넘치도록 도우십니다. 웃시야가 하나님을 찾는 동안, 하나님은 전쟁, 건축, 농업 등 웃시야가 하는 모든 일을 잘되게 하셨습니다. 하나님 나라 공동체에서 가장 탁월한 행정은 간절하게 하나님의 뜻을 찾는 것입니다. 하나님 보시기에 올바를 때, 하나님이 도우십니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 16-23 Pride is a spiritual disease that often arises when prosperity puffs us up. God's Word consistently warns us that pride leads to destruction (Prov. 16:18). If we look closely, we see that the proud inevitably fall. Therefore, we must continually examine ourselves and remain humble before the Lord (James 4:10).

교만은 형통할 때 찾아오는 영적 질병입니다. 하나님의 말씀은 우리에게 교만이 패망의 지름길임을 일관되게 경고합니다(잠 16:18). 교만한 자의 몰락은 우리 주변에서도 어렵지 않게 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 그러니 늘 주님 앞에 겸손할 수 있도록 돌아보아야 합니다(약 4:10).

God, help me to seek you, pray without ceasing, and obey you wholeheartedly.
